Donald Trump Addresses Hurricane Harvey

President Donald Trump visited Texas to provide support to Hurricane Harvey victims but according to Politico, he didn’t meet any victims of the storm. However, he did remark on the size of the crowd, with “What a crowd, what a turnout.” Unlike Trump, previous presidents, such as George W.Bush, even though his visit during Hurricane Katrina was delayed, he visited victims when he finally visited. Also, Former president, Barack Obama, visited victims during Superstorm Sandy.

The death toll continues to rise and Harvey has displaced over 30,000 people without homes and the president, in the wake of this disaster, responded to this tragedy with a rally. Due to the response of the Texas rally, Trump’s approval rating is predicted to go extremely low. Only 35% of Americans approve of what he is doing, according to the political poll website, Gallup. Trump is still being criticized for his reaction to the Charlottesville, Virginia terrorist attack. The president seems to have a lack of empathy when it comes to natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

Even though Trump is receiving criticism from multiple U.S. citizens, Texas leaders seemed to appreciate Trump’s visit. Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott said the president has been with Texas “every step of the way.” Tropical Storm Harvey hits Louisiana as many parts of Texas remains underwater. At least 20 people lost their lives and sent 32,000 more to shelters when the storm started Friday in Southeast Texas. FEMA is starting to move people out of shelters and into transitional housing in hotels. 210,000 households have registered with FEMA for financial assistance and 37 million dollars have been provided.
